The Correct Use of Jamais in French

Many people who learn French know that its a language of tricky spellings. Jamais  is one of those words. It sometimes poses problems to the language learners because you can easily confuse it with jaimais, which means something completely different. Jaimais,  spelled with the added apostrophe and i, means I loved, or I was loving/liking/enjoying and comes from the  verb aimer. Whereas jamais often means never. You can imagine the confusion if instead of telling someone you loved them, you tell them never. Spelling can be really crucial. Regarding the meanings of jamais, there are actually a few different uses of this word. When jamais takes the place of pas in a negation, it means, never. Isolated, jamais also takes on its original meaning of never. However, depending on the context and the structure of the sentence, jamais can also become an adverb and mean either ever or never. See below to learn how to distinguish the different meanings of jamais. Ne...Jamais In a negative construction, where instead of ne ... pas, you will find ne...jamais, the meaning changes from not to never. Je ne ferais pas à §a. I wouldnt do that.Je ne ferais jamais à §a. I would never do that. Jamais is one of the few words that can replace the pas part of the negative in a negation sentence. Some of the others are aucun, personne, and  rien, which are  French negative pronouns. Another anomaly with jamais  is that it doesnt necessarily need to be placed directly after the verb. For emphasis, you can start your sentence with it as well. Jamais je nai vu quelque chose daussi beau. I have never seen anything as beautiful.Jamais je ne toublierai. I will never forget you. Note that in spoken modern French, the ne part of the negation often glides, or even totally disappears. So you need to train your ear to focus on the second part of the negation rather than relying on the first, the ne. Je nai jamais dit à §a sounds like: Jnay jamay di sa or even jay jamay di sa, but both pronunciations mean the same thing.  Because of this difficulty, focus on the context, as that is the best way to identifying the meaning of jamais. Jamais on Its Own The simplest and most traditional meaning of jamais is never. Besides negation sentences, jamais also means never when used on its own or in a sentence fragment. Est-ce que tu travailles le lundi? Non, jamais. Do you work on Mondays? No, never.Est-ce que tu travailles le Samedi? Oui, mais jamais le dimanche. Do you work on Saturdays? Yes, but never on Sundays. Jamais in a Question or Hypothesis When used by itself in a question or a hypothesis without a negative, jamais means ever. In questions, jamais creates a very formal tone and its meaning becomes ever. Similarly, with the hypothetical si, as in the expression si jamais, the meaning is if ever. Jamais in Formal Questions A-t-elle jamais dansà © le tango? Has she ever danced tango?Tu tes jamais demandà © si cà ©tait vrai? Have you ever wondered if it was true?Es-tu jamais allà © à   Paris? Have you ever been to Paris? Today, its more common to use dà ©jà  , meaning already, instead of jamais. This is mainly the case when the verb is in past tense, as in: Es-tu dà ©jà   allà © à   Paris? Have you ever (already) been to Paris?As-tu dà ©jà   vu le nouvel Alien? Have you already seen the new Alien movie? Si Jamais Si jamais tu as besoin de quoique ce soit, appelle-moi. If you ever need anything, let me know.Si jamais tu vas à   Paris, tà ©là ©phone-moi. If you ever go to Paris, call me. If modern spoken French frequently drops the ne, how do you know if its ever or never? As mentioned earlier, you have to take into consideration the context of the sentence.   French Expressions With Jamais Finally, jamais is part of many expressions, all having to do with ever and never. Tu es plus belle que jamais mon amour. You are as beautiful as ever my love.Maintenant, ils seront ensemble à   jamais. Now, they will be together forever.Je laime à   tout jamais. I love him forever and ever.Cest maintenant ou jamais. Its now or never.  Je nai jamais rien dit. I have never told anything.

The area is situated by the sea and at the location with specifically plentiful marine life. The economy of this area is always turned around fishing and other professions, which aid the industry. The authorities at Clipper Bay believe that tourism will be advantageous in finding new and innovative opportunities (Arch Daily, 2010). The people in the tourism committees have decided to enhance the tourism by adopting cost-benefit approach. It will emphasize on developing the eco-tourism and fun and entertainment industry. The following report examines the development approach for uplifting the travel and tourism at Clipper Bay. It includes different causes of development by looking at advantages and disadvantages of various factors, like; socio-cultural, economic and environmental factors. Furthermore, it defines a sustainable approach that can be used for developing tourism sector, i.e. responsible tourism approach. At the end, the report marketing a discussion about stakeholders, who are associated in this economic regeneration via tourism at Clipper Bay. Development Approach Considering the requirement of economic revitalization at Clipper Bay, it is necessary to create a development plan for safeguarding the society from reduction of resources by addressing the change issues and securing the cultural and natural heritage. The communities at the town require renewing the economy by evolving commercial areas, industries, highways and corridors. In this fast changing world, businessmen and entrepreneurs should make efforts to promote the domestic culture and business to enhance the quality of life at Clipper Bay. The authorities can develop the best development approach by involve the societies and other related people in the town, who are concerned about justifiable results (Antonio, Arora, Doehring Hernandez, 2014). In this approach, identification of business sectors for economic development is most important part in this economic renewal. At Clipper Bay, there is a fishing industry, which is the major reason of livelihood of its population. So, this sector can be taken for the development. Agriculture and farming can work as the best manner for income the generation in the future. The town should consider these two sectors and promote the tourism and culture by generating revenues. It will be very helpful for the economy revitalization. Moreover, the organization should develop a program to make the local people aware. The population of Clipper Bay should be attentive about the well-being and other related concerns (Ardahaey, 2011). At Clipper, the tourism operators should stick a board with the instructions at its popular attractions that should be followed all the travellers and tourists. In this way, the authorities at Clipper should involve all the associated parties in revitalization process. Cost Benefit Analysis Cost benefit analysis is an important technique that can be adopted for economic growth of the tourism activities. In any area, cost benefit analysis is an approach that is adopted by an organization to make the decisions in different situations, where the investment plan is forecasted to generate the significant costs and benefits that cannot be utilized completely via market transactions (Briassoulis Van der Straaten, 2013). At Clipper Bay, cost and benefit analysis will assist the government to emphasize on the important variables of tourism growth or positive and adverse effects. At Clipper, the management will implement the cost benefit analysis by looking at some aspects, like; ease of access, pool of labor and resource readiness. Ease of Access The tourists can reach to Clipper Bay via road transport. It would decrease travelling time and number of busses will be increased after the construction of highway road. Although, the people may face issues related to overcrowding, when the number of tourists will be increased. In this context, two way coastal roads can work as a better way to keep control on tourists. In this way, constructing new high way road will be an advantage to the Clipper Bay. This will offer so many benefits to the growth of the town in near future (Burayidi, 2013). Pool of Labor Pool of labor is also a factor that can be used in the cost benefit analysis. The people at Clipper Bay are doing finance business and they may fight with the development of tourism. In this process, tourism managers may confront various issues as there is a slight pool of labor with restricted arrangement of capacity (Crdenas-Garca, Snchez-Rivero Pulido-Fernndez, 2015). The managers will need to make the people aware to develop them with the knowledge and ability and then appoint the employees from neighboring towns. Availability of Resources The worldwide population travel to Clipper for visiting the natural attractions. They travel from urban locations to feel relaxing from their routine life. Resorts and hotels can be situated along with the coastal area to provide sufficient water for guests and travellers. At Clipper Bay, eco-tourism can be done by bringing the tourists to visit the lime stone cave and go for camping in forest (Coria Calfucura, 2012). Thus, all of these factors indicate that this is a better alternative to select tourism as primary source for Clipper Bay with these conditions. Sustainable Approach (Responsible Tourism) At Clipper Bay, travel and tourism is chosen for economic revitalization in the area, so there is a need of implementation of sustainable approach. As a sustainable approach, the responsible approach can be suggested at Clipper Bay (Frey George, 2010). This type of approach indicates an approach, which engages all the people and related stakeholders in the activities, like; businesses, domestic people of town, government, tour managers, tourists etc. This approach of responsible tourism will emphasize on the fact that all the related people and stakeholders are similarly responsible in this development process. By implementing this approach, the departments will perform the activities by setting the objective of making better place to stay and to visit (Eusbio, Carneiro, Kastenholz Alvelos, 2016). This responsible approach will be beneficial for this economic revitalization at Clipper Bay. The tourism industry will improve by implementing this approach as Clipper Bay and in turn it will revitalize the area economically. In addition, responsible approach of tourism will reduce the impact of economic, socio-cultural and environmental factors and generate economic benefits to domestic people in town. Infrastructure Plan For any tourist place, basic infrastructure consists of roads, hotels, electricity, highways, parks, hospitals, buildings, towers and other assisting structures, that aid tourism. At Clipper Bay, the concept of Geographic Information System (GIS) will be adopted for revising the infrastructure plan. This plan will different divisions, like; visitors division, network planning for transportation and zones (George, Mair Reid, 2009). Furthermore, the visitors can also be segmented in many groups, like; business travellers, tourists on beaches, docks and town and research people for exploring the heritage and culture of Clipper Bay. Another phase, i.e. zoning, will include that zones in town will be segmented by considering the interest of tourists. Furthermore, it will ensure that all of these zones are linked via network of roads. Superstructure The changes and sustainability in travel and tourism cannot be seen without enhancing its superstructure. This superstructure may include different amenities related to structure at tourist destinations and attractions at Clipper Bay. These all things will be enhanced at beach front at Clipper to enhance the beach structure (Kim, Chen Shawn Jang, 2006). The main amenities of beach superstructure include rooms, showers, clinics, rescue centers, changing rooms for tourists, security towers, food stores etc. Stakeholders There may be different stakeholders in tourism industry at Clipper Bay, such as; tourists, domestic people, government, tourism managers and authorities, tour operators, societies and other agencies. These stakeholders will have their specific responsibilities and roles in the growth of eco-tourism. There is a diagram, which includes all the stakeholders, who will perform the activities collectively (Lee, 2013). They all will work for the interest of population of Clipper and tourists by developing awareness among tourists and fulfilling their social duties and responsibilities. Analysis of Economic Elements in Tourism There are various economic factors, which are significant in the travel and tourism industry. These economic factors have both advantages and disadvantages in economic revitalization at Clipper Bay. There may be some economic advantages of tourism at Clipper Bay. These factors are like economic development through multiplier impact revenue to the society, by balance of payment and generation of various employment opportunities in the town. Multiplier Effect: Multiplier effect occurs, when the people start to spend the money on their trips and tours. First, the tour operators in Clipper Bay have direct impact of multiplier while they will generate cash from travellers (Leigh Blakely, 2016). It will have an indirect impact on the domestic population of Clipper Bay when they will supply the sea food and receive wages from this facility as a result of business of tourism. When the people will earn more income through this business, then it will improve their living standards. By this, more funds will run in nations economy. Balance of Payment and Employment Opportunities: With this economic revitalization, some hotels, restaurants and resorts will be opened up in the town. It will enhance the job and employment opportunities at Clipper Bay. It will be a kind of direct employment for domestic people. It will occur with the development of tourism. This growth in eco-tourism will enhance the indirect employment when the local fisherman and business class people hire more workers to deal with the increased demands and needs from the travellers and tourists (Lynch, 2013). Other Economic Aspects: Apart from above factors, there will be some other monetary impacts, like; expansion of business and foreign direct investment. By establishing this specific objective, there will be a need of significant capital for creating the foundation. The government and authorities at Clipper Bay can assist the tourism by spreading and elevating to international investors to construct resorts, factory outlets, hotels, restaurants in the town. These foreign direct investments will offer the benefits to both town and its people as well. Moreover, the government may help the businesses and professions by providing funds and grants (Mowforth Munt, 2015). Along with the growth in the economy, inflation will also occur at Clipper Bay. With the increase in number of travellers and tourists, there will be expansion in the sale of local goods. This will increase the spending of local people and this spending will impact the inflation negatively. Because of this, the population that is living in Clipper Bay will confront unusual costs of living (Sharpley, 2015). In this process, government and tourism authorities can try to regulate the inflation by utilizing a method, i.e. concretionary. Furthermore, another disadvantage is the increase in the job and employment opportunities. Although, it will be good for the people of town, but it will switch the local people from their conventional business, i.e. waving and fishing to tourism and hospitality industry. Analysis of Socio-cultural Factors in Tourism There are some socio-cultural factors, which have both advantages and disadvantages to the town and community of Clipper Bay. These socio-cultural aspects are Exposure of artworks: The government should focus on the exposure of specialty and artworks of town. This exposure will increase the travellers and visitors, who are travelling to Clipper Bay as there is direct connection between domestic people and visitors. With this increased awareness, commercialization of these artworks can occur (Sinclair-Maragh, Gursoy Vieregge, 2015). With this, the government can make focus on Clipper Bay with antique center to make it safe and it will ensure that only domestic craft products will be sold at this antique center. Safeguarding the heritage: The government should make some changes in the rules and regulations at attractions. The government can utilize the tax, which is collected from the visitors to build a gallery in the town for tourists and youth generation, so that they can understand and mean the neighborhood social. There will be an instructor to safeguard and protect the culture and heritage and ensuring that there would not be pollution from vehicles, factories and industries. Cross-Cultural Obligation: When the number of tourists will increase in Clipper Bay, then local people can demonstrate their own lifestyle. This will not only allow the tourists to understand the indigenous local people bur also the people will be prepared to expand their mindfulness through becoming informal. The domestic people will have the potential to have the benefit when any regular tourist begins to involve and help them in their routine activities (Webster Ivanov, 2014). They will make efforts to revolutionize the tourism and incorporate new things from other tradition and culture. Apart from these advantages, there are some disadvantages of socio-cultural factors from tourism at Clipper Bay. Because the people from different places and culture are arriving to Clipper Bay, it will affect the youths for being beak free from their daily practices and works. It will lead to the loss of custom in the town, as the local people will avoid the weaving and fishing business for getting better jobs in the hotels and resorts. In this way, it will impact the traditional and social segment of the town. In addition, there may be chances of moral disintegration, like; consumption of alcohol and smoking that can influence the religion of Clipper Bay. Some other disadvantages of these factors are that there will be scarcity of resources and assets because of overcrowding in town (Woo, Kim Uysal, 2015). Environmental Factors in Tourism There are some environmental factors, which may have both advantages and disadvantages to the town and its population. The advantages from these factors are stated below; Safeguarding the environment: In this economic revitalization process, the government will emphasize to allocate the land for national parks for making the animal and wildlife safe. The animals and creatures, which are harmful for the people, will be kept in the restricted area of parks. The authorities can sanction an area of beach front for building national park for protecting the vegetation. Thus, these environmental factors will assist in enhancing the life of animals and plants at Clipper Bay. There are some other advantages, like; the income and revenues, which are earned from the famous tourist attractions in the town, can be utilized for renovation and development of these tourist destinations. In renewing the tourism, the management will make some eco-friendly and green efforts at Clipper Bay (Webster Ivanov, 2014). It will improve the eco-tourism and use the biodegradable components. It will be advantageous for all over environment of Clipper Bay. There are some environmental aspects, which have disadvantages from the growth of tourism business at Clipper Bay. There may be some issues related to the pollution, like; water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. Increased utilization of transportation, like; airplanes and busses can increase the air pollution in the town (Mowforth Munt, 2015). Due to tourism, there may be chances of misuse of natural resources, like; land, water, greenery etc. It can cause some environmental hazards, such as; pollution because of drugs, cigars and plastic bags. Conclusion From the above analysis, it can be concluded that tourism can be a major industry for economy revitalization at Clipper Bay. For enticing a significant number of tourists, the authorities and government have decided to improve the infrastructure and tourist attractions to the town. All the developments and improvements are well-organized to deal with the future alterations to keep them more attractive and updated. At Clipper Bay, the government will take the advantages from different factors, like; social, cultural, economic, environmental etc. By this economic revitalization, Clipper Bay will be emerged as a famous tourist destination for visiting. The report includes advantages and disadvantages of different aspects, related to tourism development. References Antonio, E., Arora, K., Doehring, C., Hernandez, A. (2014). Nuclear Energy Essays (2938 words) - Nuclear Technology, Actinides

Nuclear Energy Let American Consumer Counseling Help you Get Out of Debt! Nuclear Energy You are watching the control panels and gages for rector two. Sitting comely you think about how easy your job is. It is a joke! All day you sit around and watch the gages for reactor number two just to make sure they maintain their settings. You don't even need to look at the gages either because a computer automatically regulates them without you. Life is so good. Suddenly all the sirens go of and the gages and displays spin wildly in every direction. The ground shakes and you can hear the sound of a deep rumble. Unknown to you, the reactor's cooling pumps have failed to cool the reactor's core and in 3 seconds the temperature went from 280 degrees centigrade to 4,000 degrees centigrade. The water that was in the reactor is instantly turned to steam which creates tremendous amount of pressure in the reactor core. Above the reactor core there is a 5 foot thick lead plate and above that there is a meter thick floor composed of iron, barium, serpentine, concrete, and stone. The exploding steam fires the floor up like shrapnel. The metal plate goes through the four foot thick concrete roof like butter and reaches and altitude of sixty meters. You can hear ripping, rending, wrenching, screeching, scraping, tearing sounds of a vast machine breaking apart. L. Ray Silver, a leading author who covered the disaster at Chernobyl, said that within the core, steam reacts with zirconium to produce that first explosive in nature's arsenal, hydrogen. Near-molten fuel fragments shatter nearly incandescent graphite, torching chunks of it, exploding the hydrogen. The explosion breaks every pipe in the building rocking it with such power that the building is split into sections (11-13). You look down at your body and notice that it feels hot and your hands look different. Unknown to you a tremendous amount of neutrons are hitting your cells and taking chucks out of your skin. Suddenly everything goes black. The paragraph above describes the scene of what happened at Chernobyl nuclear plant a few years ago. From that time until the present many other smaller accidents have happened. From these accidents many people have died and millions have been indirectly affected. Nuclear energy has far to many negative problems than advantages. From the mining of uranium to disposal of nuclear waist there are problems of such magnitude that no scientist on this earth has an answer for. Nuclear energy has so many problems associated to it that it should be banned from the earth. To understand the threat of nuclear energy we must first understand what happens in a nuclear reaction. Ann E. Weiss, who has written several books on the subject of nuclear energy, described what happens inside a nuclear power plant. In a nuclear reaction the nuclei of its atoms split, producing energy in the form of heat. The heat makes steam which powers a turbine. Fission takes place in a nuclear reactor. The fuel used is pellets of uranium. In a modern reactor, half-inch long pellets of uranium are packed into 12 or 14 foot tubes made of an alloy of the metal zirconium. About 50,000 zircalloy fuel rods make up the reaction core. To control a nuclear reaction control rods made of cadmium is used which absorbs neutrons. With the control rods in place in the core, a chain reaction cannot begin. When the plant operators want to start the chain reaction they activate machinery that pulls the control rods away from the core. Once this is done a single free neutron is enough to set off the reaction. As the reaction continues, a moderator slows the neutrons down enough to ensure that they will continually split more uranium atoms. At the same time, the moderator acts as a coolant. It keep the overall temperature about 300 degrees Celsius. Since the temperature at spots inside the fuel rods may be as high as 1,100 degrees Celsius, enormous amounts of coolant are continually needed to keep the core temperature at the proper level. When the plant must be must be shut down the control rods are lowered all the way back into the core. That brings the chain reaction to a standstill. The core cools, and steam is no longer produced (23-24). In all nuclear reactions use uranium and produce some plutonium. Since nuclear reactions produce a considerable amount of plutonium there are considerable hazards that come along with it. Nader and Abbotts, two men who have a great amount of

The Root Word Solve and Its Offshoots The Root Word Solve and Its Offshoots The Root Word Solve and Its Offshoots By Mark Nichol A small family of words with the root word solve refer in some way to changing the physical or figurative state of something- naturally, since the Latin root of solve, solvere, means â€Å"dissolve, loosen, or solve.† Solve itself means â€Å"find an answer, explanation, or solution for.† One who solves is a solver (rarely used in isolation but part of the common phrase â€Å"problem solver†); something solved is a solution, and solution is also defined as a liquid in which something has been dissolved. To dissolve, in turn, is to cause something to pass into a solution (the liquid type), though it also means â€Å"destroy, disintegrate, or terminate† or â€Å"make legally void.† The noun for such an action is dissolution (not to be confused with disillusion, a synonym for disenchant as a verb and the noun disenchantment). Dissolve has also acquired a sense as a noun, used in cinematography to describe a transition achieved by gradual imposition of one image onto another, and it serves as a verb in that context as well. A solvent, meanwhile, is a liquid used to dissolve another substance, or anything that solves a problem or eliminates or diminishes an obstacle. Solvent can also be an adjective meaning â€Å"able to dissolve† or â€Å"able to pay debts.† The adjective soluble, by contrast, has the former sense but not the latter, though it also means â€Å"able to be explained or solved.† (The antonyms are insolvent and insoluble.) Absolve means â€Å"forgive† or â€Å"free from blame or responsibility†; an act taken to absolve someone is an absolution. (One is said to give or grant absolution.) Interestingly, the adjective absolute, meaning â€Å"complete† or â€Å"unlimited,† is related; it derives from the Latin term absolutus, meaning â€Å"absolve† or â€Å"set free.† Resolve, too, is related: To resolve is to find an answer or solution, or to make a serious decision or take a formal vote to do something. The noun form is resolution, though one can also use resolve as a noun, employing it as a synonym for determination, and the adjectival form is resolute. (The antonyms for the adjectives resolved and resolute are unresolved and irresolute, and a lack of resolution is irresolution.) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Conquistador and Explorer

Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa, Conquistador and Explorer Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa (1475–1519) was a Spanish conquistador, explorer, and administrator. He is best known for leading the first European expedition to sight the Pacific Ocean, or the South Sea as he referred to it. He is still remembered and venerated in Panama as a heroic explorer. Fast Facts: Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa Known For: First European sighting of the Pacific Ocean and colonial governance in what is now PanamaBorn: 1475 in Jerà ©z de los Caballeros, Extremadura province, CastileParents: Differing historical accounts of parents names: his family was noble but no longer wealthySpouse: Marà a de Peà ±alosaDied: January 1519 in Acla, near present-day Darià ©n, Panama Early Life Nuà ±ez de Balboa was born into a noble family that was no longer wealthy. His father and mother were both of noble blood in Badajoz, Spain and Vasco was born in Jerà ©z de los Caballeros in 1475. Although noble, Balboa could not hope for much in the way of even a meager inheritance, as he was the third of four sons. All titles and lands were passed to the eldest; younger sons generally went into the military or clergy. Balboa opted for the military, spending time as a page and squire at the local court. America By 1500, word had spread all over Spain and Europe of the wonders of the New World and the fortunes being made there. Young and ambitious, Balboa joined the expedition of Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1500. The expedition was mildly successful in raiding the northeastern coast of South America. In 1502, Balboa landed in Hispaniola with enough money to set himself up with a small pig farm. He was not a very good farmer, however, and by 1509 he was forced to flee his creditors in Santo Domingo. Back to the Darien Balboa stowed away (with his dog) on a ship commanded by Martà n Fernndez de Enciso, who was heading to the recently-founded town of San Sebastin de Urab with supplies. He was quickly discovered and Enciso threatened to maroon him, but the charismatic Balboa talked him out of it. When they reached San Sebastin they found that natives had destroyed it. Balboa convinced Enciso and the survivors of San Sebastin (led by Francisco Pizarro) to try again and establish a town, this time in the Darià ©n- a region of dense jungle between present-day Colombia and Panama. Santa Marà a la Antigua del Darià ©n The Spaniards landed in the Darià ©n and were quickly beset by a large force of natives under the command of Cà ©maco, a local chieftain. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Spanish prevailed and founded the city of Santa Marà a la Antigua de Darià ©n on the site of Cà ©macos old village. Enciso, as ranking officer, was put in charge but the men detested him. Clever and charismatic, Balboa rallied the men behind him and removed Enciso by arguing that the region was not part of the royal charter of Alonso de Ojeda, Encisos master. Balboa was one of two men quickly elected to serve as mayors of the city. Veragua Balboas stratagem of removing Enciso backfired in 1511. It was true that Alonso de Ojeda (and therefore, Enciso) had no legal authority over Santa Marà a, which had been founded in an area referred to as Veragua. Veragua was the domain of Diego de Nicuesa, a somewhat unstable Spanish nobleman who had not been heard from in some time. Nicuesa was discovered in the north with a handful of bedraggled survivors from an earlier expedition, and he decided to claim Santa Marà a for his own. The colonists preferred Balboa, however, and Nicuesa was not even allowed to go ashore: Indignant, he set sail for Hispaniola but was never heard from again. Governor Balboa was effectively in charge of Veragua at this point and the crown reluctantly decided to simply recognize him as governor. Once his position was official, Balboa quickly began organizing expeditions to explore the region. The local tribes of indigenous natives were not united and were powerless to resist the Spanish, who were better armed and disciplined. The colonizers collected much gold and pearls through their military power, which in turn drew more men to the settlement. They began hearing rumors of a great sea and a rich kingdom to the south. Expedition to the South The narrow strip of land which is Panama and the northern tip of Colombia runs east to west, not north to south as some might suppose. Therefore, when Balboa, along with about 190 Spaniards and a handful of natives, decided to search for this sea in 1513, they headed mostly south, not west. They fought their way through the isthmus, leaving many wounded behind with friendly or conquered chieftains. On September 25, Balboa and a handful of battered Spaniards (Francisco Pizarro was among them) first saw the Pacific Ocean, which they named the â€Å"South Sea.† Balboa waded into the water and claimed the sea for Spain. Pedrarà as Dvila The Spanish crown, still with some lingering doubt over whether or not Balboa had correctly handled Enciso, sent a massive fleet to Veragua (now named Castilla de Oro) under the command of veteran soldier Pedrarà as Dvila. Fifteen hundred men and women flooded the tiny settlement. Dvila had been named governor to replace Balboa, who accepted the change with good humor, although the colonists still preferred him to Dvila. Dvila proved to be a poor administrator and hundreds of settlers died, mostly those who had sailed with him from Spain. Balboa tried to recruit some men to explore the South Sea without Dvila knowing, but he was found out and arrested. Vasco and Pedrarà as Santa Marà a had two leaders: officially, Dvila was governor, but Balboa was more popular. They continued to clash until 1517 when it was arranged for Balboa to marry one of Dvila’s daughters. Balboa married Marà a de Peà ±alosa despite an obstacle: she was in a convent in Spain at the time and they had to marry by proxy. In fact, she never left the convent. Before long, the rivalry flared up again. Balboa left Santa Marà a for the small town of Aclo with 300 of those who still preferred his leadership to that of Dvila. He was successful in establishing a settlement and building some ships. Death Fearing the charismatic Balboa as a potential rival, Dvila decided to get rid of him once and for all. Balboa was arrested by a squad of soldiers led by Francisco Pizarro as he made preparations to explore the Pacific coast of northern South America. He was hauled back to Aclo in chains and quickly tried for treason against the crown: The charge was that he had tried to establish his own independent fiefdom of the South Sea, independent from that of Dvila. Enraged, Balboa shouted out that he was a loyal servant of the crown, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. He was beheaded in January of 1519 along with four of his companions (there are conflicting accounts of the exact date of the execution). Without Balboa, the colony of Santa Marà a quickly failed. Where he had cultivated positive ties with local natives for trade, Dvila enslaved them, resulting in short-term economic profit but long-term disaster for the colony. In 1519, Dvila forcibly moved all of the settlers to the Pacific side of the isthmus, founding Panama City, and by 1524 Santa Marà a had been razed by angry natives. Legacy The legacy of Vasco Nuà ±ez de Balboa is brighter than that of many of his contemporaries. While many  conquistadors, such as  Pedro de Alvarado,  Hernn Cortà ©s,  and  Pnfilo de Narvaez  are today remembered for cruelty, exploitation, and inhuman treatment of natives, Balboa is remembered as an explorer, fair administrator, and popular governor who made his settlements work. As for relations with natives, Balboa was guilty of his share of atrocities, including enslavement and setting his dogs on homosexual men in one village. In general, however, he is thought to have dealt with his native allies well, treating them with respect and friendship which translated into beneficial trade and food for his settlements. Although he and his men were the first to see the Pacific Ocean while heading west from the New World, it would be  Ferdinand Magellan  who would get the credit for naming it when he rounded the southern tip of South America in 1520. Balboa is best remembered in  Panama, where many streets, businesses, and parks bear his name. There is a stately monument in his honor in Panama City (a district of which bears his name) and the national currency is called the Balboa. There is even a lunar crater named after him. After the tan lines have aded Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

After the tan lines have aded - Essay Example Cancer is probably the most alarming illness that can claim thousands of lives in just a year. While some may be cured with the use of the latest technologies, others are just too severe that several treatments are not an assurance that a person will be able to live a normal life after undergoing a number of therapies and medicine intakes. So, should indoor tanning be banned for minorsThere are several factors which contribute to having a skin cancer and perhaps the most common and well known cause of it is too much exposure in the sun. It is not new to almost everyone that the sun's ray is at its strongest from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM so it is advisable that if one is going to go outside between the said periods of time, it is recommended to apply sunscreen, wear a hat or even sun glasses to protect the eyes. Nevertheless, in a recent survey conducted by American Academy of Dermatology, over 10,000 young people ages 12-18 from all 50 states, found that the use of sunscreen on sunny d ays was practiced by only 34.4 percent. The said survey also discovered that natural sunlight wasn't the only significant source of UV exposure for teens nowadays. Approximately 10 percent of teens had used tanning beds. (http://medi-smart.com)Tanning is "IN", or so what these teens thought. And who does not want a sun-kissed look everyday The look of summer never fails to leave a sexy impression on almost everyone that girls of any age would do almost anything just to get that "just got from the beach" look. Almost any thing that they are even willing to take their lives is at risk. With indoor tanning, those who wish to achieve a bronze look don't need to wait for summer to come or pray for a good weather for sun bathing. Because anytime of the day, regardless of the climate and weather, one can obtain a perfect tan she has always wanted by just merely going to a tanning salon. However, although indoor tanning is a booming business in the United States, generating estimated revenues in excess of $5 billion a year, several skin specialists, including WHO (World Health Organization) says tanning beds could be responsible for an epidemic of skin cancer in the future because teens love to tan. (http://www.poynter.org) In Canada, the National Cancer Institute estimated that doctors will detect more than 80,000 skin cancer cases, and up to 5,000 of those will be melanoma. (http://www.cyc-net.org) Malignant melanoma is a less common, but a potentially deadly, type of skin cancer. Melanoma has been linked to intense intermittent and long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation during childhood or the teenage years, (http://www.crd.bc.ca) and an awful truth is that public health officials in Ontario, Canada learned that tanning salons were even catering to children as young as eight. (http://www.skincancer.org) In light with this, this study will find out if indoor tanning is one of the main causes of skin cancer of minors and if there are other side effects of this. Also, this study will give rise to a supposition if it is recommended to be used by people who are below 18 years of age. This will also discuss further the current Bylaw Regulating Tanning Facilities and if this law is enough to defend the teenagers out there on the possible hazards of indoor tanning. Basking under the sun has been one of the favorite past times of the people especially during summer. Strolling along the beach in a stunning bikini and a perfect tan line to boot never fails to get a second glance from anyone. Nowadays, being tan is already becoming a fashion statement that almost everyone is dying to achieve the sexy tan lines they get from
